Keeping Your Brand Look and Message Consistent. - Issue: 2003 Qtr 2

In branding, consistency of presentation is important in maintaining the promise of your brand. So how do you orchestrate a consistent brand look and message? One good way is through the use of a style manual.
Often, the greatest challenge with branding is managing the outside suppliers who help you with advertising, promotions, direct mail and other branding activities. By developing a style manual, you have a method for communicating the essence of your brand as well as standards to follow. This way, everyone can be “singing off the same sheet of music,” so to speak.
Some elements of a good style manual include an outline of your different levels of brands — that is corporate brand, master brand, product brand. Your style manual might also include what is called key messaging, which provides consistent verbiage about how your brand or brands should be communicated.
Finally, it should provide detailed graphic standards that outline how brands should be represented visually. Including samples of previously produced materials is also a good idea. Keeping your brand messaging on strategy shouldn’t be difficult if you have a good style manual.
